What Is Deck Design?
Deck design is the planning stage where layout, materials, features, and flow are worked out before construction begins. It covers everything from footprint and elevation changes to railing style and built-in features like seating or planters. Franconia, PA homeowners who invest time in design up front end up with decks that fit how they actually live, rather than a generic rectangle that does not account for sun exposure, sightlines, or how the space connects to the rest of the yard.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Skipping proper design and jumping straight to construction often results in a deck that technically works but does not feel right, whether that is stairs landing in an awkward spot, a footprint that blocks a favorite window view, or a layout that ignores where afternoon sun makes the space uncomfortable in summer. These are expensive mistakes to fix after the deck is built, while they cost nothing to correct on paper during the design phase.
Our Process
Site walk and goals discussion
We walk your yard with you, discussing how you want to use the space, from entertaining to quiet mornings, and note sun patterns, views, and access points.
Layout and footprint planning
We sketch footprint options that fit your goals, considering elevation changes, existing landscaping, and how the deck connects to your home's entry points.
Material and feature selection
We work through decking material, railing style, and any built-in features like benches, planters, or lighting, matched to your budget.
Final plan and structural review
The finalized design is checked against structural and code requirements before moving into the construction phase.
What to Expect
Design typically starts with a conversation about how you use your outdoor space, followed by a site walk to understand the physical realities of your yard. We usually present one or two layout concepts for you to react to, refining based on your feedback before locking in a final plan. Design timelines vary, but most Franconia, PA design phases wrap up within one to two weeks before moving into construction scheduling.
